Was at the Today Show this morning and when Matt Lauer announced that Sen. Byrd had died, the winger next to me seemed joyful and said, “About time!” Then Matt announced that the Dick Cheney was out of the hospital and I could have made a smart ass remark about Darth Vader, too, but didn’t.
Sen. Byrd LEFT the KKK in his 20′s and over the years, like many Southerners, saw the errors of the beliefs he was raised with in rural West Virginia. At least he didn’t keep his racist views to the bitter end like Strom Thurmond and some other racist Republicans.
Sen. Byrd at least was well versed in the U.S. Constitution unlike many in Congress. Although he tended to be conservative, I admired him for his openess of his beliefs and respected the changes he made over his life.

The truth of the matter is he had lied about his relationship with the KKK continuously. He continued the lie even in his last book. While he may have done some good deeds and he may have been a powerful and influential person in D.C., nothing is in evidence that he changed in any way. He grew silent on the topic. He did reject every black nomination that came his way however. Name one nomination that he approved that was, of color?

Byrd opposed the nomination of blacks, in fact he was the only senator to oppose Thurgood Marshall AND Clarence Thomas (The only two black Justices to serve on the court) He actively opposed the Voting Rights act of 65′ and the Civil Rights Act of 64′, both meant to further the rights of blacks.

Yep, you’re right about him filibustering the Civil Rights Act, but it wasn’t long after that period of his life that he turned it around. In 1968, he voted in favor of it.
He opposed Thurgood’s nomination. Once he became a Supreme Court Judge, there was nothing that Byrd could do to get him “off the court”. Death, retirement or crime is the only way a Supreme Court judge loses his spot. So why would Byrd have tried again?

Byrd was a conservative Democrat closer to many Republicans on political issues so I would think the REICH wing would like him (but most cannot get past the “D” after his name since he didn’t jump to the Party of Lincoln when the GOP racists initiated their Southern Strategy to win over the racists in the South). His “progressive score” of 37 means that Sen. Byrd has positively acted to support 37% of a slate of progressive policies in the 111th Congress. However he was socially liberal enough to be pro-equality in the work place, pro-labor. Politically Byrd was probably closer to Pat Buchanan (both were against the Bush attack on Iraq) than he was to many Democrats.

Sen. Byrd had been a supporter of BLACK Barack Obama, both when they were in the Senate together and later Byrd supported the candidacy of Obama for President. They became good friends even though Byrd had often disagreed with Obama on policy.
