In 2000 when the Supreme Court decided to appoint Bush president (by a 5 to 4 decision), there was consternation on the left. Questions about the shenanigans and the way Katherine Harris violated the rules before and after the election and how the whole system was short circuited to prevent a complete vote count.
No one questioned Bush’s birth, or religion, or patriotism, attacked his family, called for his impeachment in 2000, or attacked his children; especially democratic congress critters .. or most mainstream progressive commentators.
When President Bush was in office, there were calls for his impeachment. It was discussed, debated, reported by the MSM, and even polled about. Bush and Impeach the president: the case against Bush and Cheney
Some calls came as early as 2003 when he was planning his invasion of Iraq, for an illegal war.
2003 BTW, not Nov 2000 (see below).
People protested the War, that is to be expected. No national supposed news organization was the central moving agent for those protests (unlike the astroturf teabagging movement).
Nor did progressive protesters refuse to permit citizens from expressing their concerns to their elected representatives like the tea baggers did in Aug 2009.
Other calls came during the revelations of illegal wiretapping after 2005.
No one suggested a coup, because Bush was ignoring the US Constitution.(like a newsmax about president Obama column has done recently)
Some state actions actually did result;
On March 21, 2006 the New Mexico Democratic Party, at a convention in Albuquerque, adopted a plank to their platform saying “the Democratic Party of New Mexico supports the impeachment of George Bush and his lawful removal from office.”
On March 24, 2007, the Vermont Democratic State Committee voted to support JRH 15, a state legislative resolution supporting impeachment, calling for its passage as “appropriate action.”
On April 28, 2007, the California Democratic Convention passed a resolution for impeachment.
At the federal level action was also taken
On June 16, 2005 Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) assembled an unofficial meeting to discuss the Downing Street memo and to consider grounds for impeachment. Conyers filed a resolution on December 18, 2005 to create an investigative committee to consider impeachment. His resolution gained 38 co-sponsors before it expired at the end of the 109th Congress.
On June 9, 2008, Representative Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), introduced a resolution, H.Res. 1258, to impeach president George W. Bush, which included 35 counts in the articles of impeachment. At the end of the evening on June 10, Kucinich offered a motion to refer HRes 1258 to the House Judiciary Committee. On June 11, the House voted 251-166 to send the resolution to the Committee.
Each of these actions were totally with in the law,
That is how the progressive part of our political structure tried to deal with what they foresaw as illegal activity by the President. They wanted Bush impeached, legally, by the rules of the US Constitution.
In contrast here is what we see from the reich wing in this country after Obama wins an election with out the hijinks in Florida circa 2000.

What I love most about President Obama is he consistently leaves the door open just far enough so he can slam the door on the right wing’s head. Recently he gave a statement concerning the CIA officers who tortured prisoners that they will not be prosecuted. He left the door open by not saying he would give immunity to those who defined torture or who wrote the torture policies! Woohoo! And you know what that means? I have a sneaking suspicion President Obama is listening to us. He wants to know if he should go ahead and prosecute. Well Mr. President…..I say YES! Either have AG Holder start the process or hire a Special Prosecutor to get the job done.

Here’s the first crime committed by George Bush and others…
In 2001, George Bush and his cohorts knew that 9/11/01 was coming and ole George prepared for it, because this is why he refused to be a signatory to the International Criminal Court (ICC) early on. As noted in John Yoo’s memo dated August 1, 2002, he’s saying it’s very difficult to find fault with the Bush Regime for torturing, because Bush did not sign our country’s name to the ICC, so therefore, it was an anything goes without prosecution policy for years….

When George Bush was doubling the national debt to the amount of $12 TRILLION dollars over the years he was the Fuhrer, the republicans in this country remained silent. When Enron crashed and George Bush didn’t demand regulations be put in place to make sure something like that never happened again, they applauded.
When he was torturing prisoners all over the planet in secret prisons, they remained silent.
When tax cuts were going to the uber wealthy and their paychecks didn’t increase, they lost their job, and their home, they were fine with it and remained silent.
When AIG decided in April of 2008 to give $400 million in bonuses to their employees that year and in Sept/Oct 2008 when the company started to crash, the employees in the financial product department (WHERE THE HEAD OF THE CREDIT DEFAULT/DERIVITIES PIG LIVES) got their bonuses anyway at the end of 2008 and more today, even after we, the American government, bailed this company out to the tune of $150 billion, the right wingers remained silent.
When the stock market would plummet 800 points on a day under George Bush in his last year, they said it was a correction. And when the stock market went from 14,000 points to under 8,000 points by the time George Bush left office, again, they remained silent, didn’t care, and said it was just the market fixing itself.
When the stock market goes up today, it’s because of George Bush’s brilliance too! Spit.

Well, let’s just say GM decided to give those republican Senators a chance to earn their $165,000/year pay by announcing the layoff of autoworkers in mainly their districts! Yep. I guess GM was thinking these tough Union-busting-assholes could fend off the hungry sharks all by themselves. It will be so sad seeing these Senators ripped apart by their limbs when these workers start losing their jobs….all because these Senators decided to go after black Americans once again through the back door!
Americans are not stupid. We know exactly who is to blame for our current economic situation. Our nation’s collapse has been in the making for almost 30 years now and we all know the republicans have controlled the Congress for a good portion of that time, even if they didn’t control the White House. Hell, under George W. Bush, the republicans controlled the White House and the Congress, and what did they do during that time? Nothing! They did nothing to regulate the banking industry, Wall Street, oil industry (high prices caused many small businesses to fold), or the auto industry! Instead, they focused on Terri Schiavo and absolutely refused to allow the Democrats to talk about Iraq or bring forth legislation on anything. And what have the republicans done since 2006 after the Democrats took control of both Houses? Oh that’s right! They’ve blocked everything the Democrats have wanted to do. And they’re still doing it. The republicans are now to blame for more jobs being lost in our country and it’s all because they live in this warped little reality where they believe the only way for America to be strong is to lose all it’s jobs, to owe the planet trillions of dollars, and to have no regulations, because with laws, rules, and regulations, that means the republicans of America have to sit up straight and be good. They can’t handle this kind of thing, because they’re all criminals on so many levels!
This is not an Obama Recession as the reich wingers are trying to say it is. It’s a Hate Party Depression brought to us by the Reagan Crazies with the Bush Crazies finishing it off. The End.

- Khalid Sheik Mohammad and the other four 9/11/01 ‘masterminds’ have all decided to plead guilty to their crimes.
- The Blackwater contractors who gunned down, bombed, and killed innocent Iraqis at a packed intersection in 2007 have all given themselves up to authorities to face their justice.
It’s so interesting to me that things are going this smoothly! Yeah, yeah, how the hell did the Bush Regime get Khalid and others to plead guilty after all these years…..and on cue…..without torturing them? And what is the Bush Regime hiding besides the torturing of the prisoners down there at GITMO? Is the Bush Regime afraid these prisoners might tell the truth about how they were obtained or their treatment thereafter and the Regime just wants them to go away and use their monkey court today to “prove” to Americans that they jailed those connected to 9/11 (just as Clinton jailed all 5 who bombed the WTC in 1993)? Or maybe it’s gotta do something with how Barack Obama wants to close GITMO when he is officially sworn in as president? It’s very possible George Bush wants to make GITMO out to be the place that houses the most vile prisoners on the planet, just so Barack won’t close it down, because having the prison down there in Cuba is keeping American eyes off it.
And why did these 9/11 masterminds decide to confess on election day, November 4th? Seems kind of strange don’t you think? Did it happen this way so Barack wouldn’t notice and what would have happened if John McCain was elected that night instead? Would they have confessed or not?
And what about the Blackwater contractors who murdered innocent Iraqis back in 2007? I find it very interesting that they’re suddenly coming forward, giving themselves up, and their company, Blackwater, is getting away scotfree. Let me guess….GEORGE BUSH WILL PARDON THESE ASSHOLES BEFORE HE LEAVES OFFICE? Hey, could be. George Bush will do everything in his power to protect himself, his Regime, and those who committed crimes on his behalf.
Where was Sen. Susan Collins when it came to Blackwater and other criminal contractors over in Iraq in doing oversight of these companies? Oh wait. I know….
She was fine with them stealing billions from us, so that means she didn’t give a flying rat’s ass about these contractors raping, torturing, and killing innocent Iraqis either! She’s a Pig. A lipstick wearing one too.

Joe LIEberman spent the last 8 years along with Sen. Susan Collins, a republican, screwing the American people over by doing zero oversight of Halliburton, KBR, Betchel, Blackwater, and other contractors as the heads of the Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee! Nothing! They did mock hearings and then did nothing. They are both an abomination and the official Brownshirts of the Bush Republican Party for crying out loud! As Jane Hamsher points out below, Joe LIEberman has not earned his right to hold a gavel of any fucking committee!!!!
Here’s what I heard Harry Reid saying today at his press conference right after he and the Democrats voted to keep Joe:
“We love Joe Lieberman. He equals change and we don’t care if he’s a republican, votes with the republicans, campaigns for the republicans, and thinks we Democrats are unpatriotic, because we’re not republicans….we just love him to death! In fact, you reporters don’t know this, but we Democrats got the chance to be butt fucked by Joe LIEberman today while we were voting for him, and I gotta tell ya….HE IS THE CHANGE OUR COUNTRY NEEDS RIGHT NOW! Holy, wow. He is the Change Meister and we are looking forward to him impeaching Barack Obama first chance, because we know Joe LIEberman loves us, our party, and wants to move forward. Moving backwards would mean….going after the Bush Admin for their High Crimes & Misdemeanors, but as Joe pointed out today while butt fucking us….IT’S NOT IMPORTANT! So again, we just wanted you all to know we love Joe more than life itself. And by the way, we listened to the American people too who are thrilled to have another republican on the Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee, because these Americans are feeling the love of change!”
Howard Dean, who is the current Chair of the Democratic Party, had the following to say on a phone call to lefty bloggers today after the Democrats voted for Joe LIEberman to stay on the Senate Homeland Security committee (you’ll be astounded to find out Howard Dean didn’t do ANY INVESTIGATING of what Joe did as the Chair/Senior Member of the this committee! He knew nothing of what this man did and didn’t do!!!!!!!!!) courtesy of Jane Hamsher of FireDogLake who was one of the few who got the call (emphasis mine):
HOWARD DEAN: What I’m saying here is along comes Lieberman. He behaved very badly during the campaign and did some things inside the club that are unforgivable.
So what… if you run and get a mandate for reconciliation, is your first act to kick this guy out of the party?
Well, people of my generation think — yeah, damn right we should. But in the new spirit of reconciliation, which is why I think Barack Obama got elected by 66% of the under 35 vote, maybe it’s not the way.
I’m very willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the Senators and to Barack Obama on that one.
Do we want to have a big fight about what should happen to Joe Lieberman? I don’t think so. I think we want to have a bigfight about whether we’re going to have a decent health insurance program or a renewable energy program or not?
JANE HAMSHER: With all due respect, Governor Dean, we were all just told to go screw ourselves. That our concern for Barack Obama and that our concern about the war and everything else that we fought so hard for within the Democratic Party is meaningless.
And that Joe being happy, and giving into his threats — and he did threaten the Democrats in his press conference — is more important than we are. And so I don’t think it was a matter of “reconciliation,” I think it was…we were told to go Cheney ourselves. And I think that that really is the sentiment online.
HOWARD DEAN: I know, I’m sure they…I haven’t seen the blogs about this because it’s just happened…but I’m sure that the sentiment online is one of outrage. But I would line up with Barack. I don’t think you were told to go screw yourselves at all, I think he that has now got to practice what he preaches during two years of campaigs that he wants to bring America together.
As objectionable as Joe’s behavior was — and frankly unprincipled — I don’t think that this is the thing that should divide us, and I don’t think it’s about his vote for FISA or anything else. What kind of a tone do we want to set? Do we want to have a purge as the first thing we do? I don’t think so. I mean, I don’t know…
JANE HAMSHER: But the tone we just set, with all due respect, is that Joe’s lack of oversight on the Homeland Security Committee, and his refusing to investigate Katrina to pay back the Republicans, and his refusal to look into billions and billions of dollars worth of graft and theft is okay for political considerations. I think that’s the message you’re sending and I don’t think that’s the change people voted for.
HOWARD DEAN: Well I don’t think that stuff is okay but I have to say I’m not terribly familiar with his record. But you know I would agree, that’s not the change we voted for, I agree with that.

JANE HAMSHER: Governor Dean, Greg Sargent just put up a post saying that you believe that the liberal blogosphere was motivated to take Joe Lieberman’s gavel away because of revenge. Is that what you think this was?
HOWARD DEAN: I think some of it was anger over his behavior, certainly I have anger over his behavior.
JANE HAMSHER: But I think the larger issue here is that Joe was not qualified for the gavel they gave him, and has proved himself unqualified over the past two years.
HOWARD DEAN: Look I’m not going to a dispute with you over that, because it sounds like you know his record much better than I. I never looked into what he was doing as the Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee. I was too busy figuring out how to win the election. So I don’t want to get into a debate on whether he’s qualified or not.
JANE HAMSHER: But do you think that’s something that the Senate should’ve looked at in deciding whether to give him the gavel or not?
HOWARD DEAN: Well, I hope they did.
Over the past year or so I’ve grappled with the idea of staying with the Democratic Party. One day I wanted to stay and then the next day I wanted to tell the party elites to fuck off. I then decided if I wanted to make change to my party I had to get involved, so starting late winter/early spring of this year, I joined my local county Democrats to do just that. We were very successful in electing Democrats locally, statewide and nationally. Proud we were of ourselves.
But now? I’m not feeling the love again. In fact, this week I’m going to withdraw from the Democratic Party and I am encouraging you to do the same, because if Howard Dean and Harry Reid aren’t listening to us, then how the fuck is that THE CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN? Huh? THIS IS NOT CHANGE…..THIS IS HOW THE PARTY ELDERS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN! I say…………..FUCK YOU!!!!
By withdrawing from the Democratic Party, YOU DON’T HAVE TO GIVE MONEY NOW! Woohoo! In fact, don’t ever give money to them again. I would love nothing more than to have the Democratic Elders crying in their rice pudding because the party is broke and wondering why they lost the 2010 races. Yep, Barack Obama hasn’t even been inaugruated yet and I’m already telling you fuckers to fuck off! And guess what? I’ll do the same thing to Barack Obama, who as of right now isn’t showing us any fucking change. If after he’s in office and decides to go down the path of Joe LIEberman and the republic party, then he will also be on the wrath of the liberals, progressives, REAL Democrats, and rational republicans!
And we wonder why I was a Dennis Kucinich supporter early on. Spit.
