Dick Cheney’s lies about President Obama

It’s pathetic to break a New Year’s resolution before we even get to New Year’s Day, but here I go. I had promised myself that I would do a better job of ignoring Dick Cheney’s corrosive and nonsensical outbursts — that I would treat them, more or less, like the pearls of wisdom one hears from homeless people sitting in bus shelters.

But he is a former vice president, which gives him a big stage for his histrionic Rottweiler-in-Winter act. It is never a good idea to let widely disseminated lies and distortions go unchallenged. And the shrill screed that Cheney unloosed Wednesday is so full of outright mendacity that, well, my resolution will have to wait.

In a statement to Politico, Cheney seemed to be trying to provide talking points for opponents of the Obama administration who — incredibly — would exploit the Christmas Day terrorist attack for political gain. Cheney’s broadside opens with a big lie, which he then repeats throughout. It is as if he believes that saying something over and over again, in a loud enough voice, magically makes it so.

“As I’ve watched the events of the last few days it is clear once again that President Obama is trying to pretend we are not at war,” Cheney begins.

Flat-out untrue.

The fact is that Obama has said many times that we are at war against terrorists. He said it as a candidate. He said it in his inaugural address: “Our nation is at war against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred.” He has said it since.

As Cheney well knows, unless he has lost even the most tenuous grip on reality, Obama’s commitment to warfare as an instrument in the fight against terrorism has won the president nothing but grief from the liberal wing of his party, with more certainly to come. Hasn’t anyone told Cheney that Obama is sharply boosting troop levels in Afghanistan in an attempt to avoid losing a war that the Bush administration started but then practically abandoned?

Cheney knows this. But he goes on to use the big lie — that Obama is “trying to pretend we are not at war” — to bludgeon the administration on a host of specific issues. Here is the one that jumps out at me: The president, Cheney claims, “seems to think that if he closes Guantanamo and releases the hard-core al Qaeda-trained terrorists still there, we won’t be at war.”

Interesting that Cheney should bring that up, because it now seems clear that the man accused of trying to blow up Northwest Flight 253, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was given training — and probably the bomb itself, which involved plastic explosives sewn into his underwear — by al-Qaeda operatives in Yemen. It happens that at least two men who were released from Guantanamo appear to have gone on to play major roles as al-Qaeda lieutenants in Yemen. Who let these dangerous people out of our custody? They were set free by the administration of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

The former vice president expresses his anger that the Obama administration is bringing Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, to trial in New York. Cheney is also angry that Obama does not use the phrase “war on terror” all the time, the way the Bush administration used to. But Obama just specifies that we’re at war against a network of terrorists, on the sensible theory that it’s impossible to wage war against a tactic.

Toward the end of his two-paragraph statement, Cheney goes completely off the rails and starts fulminating about how Obama is seeking “social transformation — the restructuring of American society.” Somehow, this is supposed to be related to the president’s alleged disavowal of war — which, of course, isn’t real anyway. It makes you wonder whether Cheney is just feeding the fantasies of the paranoid right or has actually joined the tea-party fringe.

I can find reasons to criticize the administration’s response to the Christmas Day attack. Obama and his team were slow off the mark. Their initial statements were weak. Obama shouldn’t have waited three days to speak publicly, and when he did he should have shown some emotion.

But using a terrorist attack to seek political gain? I have a New Year’s resolution to suggest for Cheney: Ahead of your quest for personal vindication, put country first.

Now when the wingnuts and conservo-tards get their bedwetting panties in a twist, and screech their talking points they have this post to rebut or fail in the talking point idiocy they play with.

But that won’t stop them any more the the facts ever have.

America has the most powerful military on the planet, we have enough nukes to blow up our planet 10 times over, and we have the most potent chemical and biological weapons known to man, but yet, we’re weak against what…a 1,000 people (at best….after 8 years of George Bush we still to this day don’t know how large or small this republican death squad actually is!)?

We also have a nation full of Americans who are sick of the terrorists and are taking action against them as they did on the Northwest flight on Christmas Day!

Closing GITMO and putting these Bush prisoners in a high security max prison in Illinois or any place else inside our country will make no difference on the strength of our country. If a guy wants to TRY to blow up a plane, he’s still going to whether or not the GITMO prisoners are in America or in Cuba. We are still the same powerful country we’ve always been (even though George Bush weakened it to the point it almost DID drown in a bathtub!), so please stop listening to George Bush’s rhetoric! Torturing Iraqis and others helped to recruit new members of al-Qaida. McCain said he got this information from an al-Qaida operative. I don’t care where he got the information, because we all know whoever is doing the torturing is the one who is going to be the target! If America’s police officers tortured every person who came through their doors, do you think Americans would respect the police like we do? Nope! This is not new information because we liberals screamed this at the top of our lungs for years under the Bush Regime and we were called ‘traitors’ for even suggesting that Cheney and others were acting like war criminals and creating more of a mess by breaking the law.

Anyway, Dick Cheney never comes out of his cave these days unless someone mentions his illegal torture program, you know, the program that his Justice Department rewrote & redefined Constitutional and International laws so they could break them! Yes, that’s right. Torture on prisoners is illegal and has been for decades now, but the Bush Regime’s Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales, decided to ignore the law and instead defined the meaning of these laws as meaning they could torture anyone they felt like. Dick Cheney can’t believe that Obama’s Attorney General, Eric Holder, is now following Constitutional Law by hiring a special prosecutor to look into what Cheney and others did!

Dick Cheney has stated over and over torture was a valuable technique in getting the information about future attacks on our nation. He says this information was used to thwart many attacks, but yet, Khalid Sheik Mohammad named names & places and I don’t remember one person being arrested across the planet who was conspiring to attack us! Do you remember arrests being made? I mean, really, KSM was caught as the ‘mastermind of 9/11′, so honestly his capture alone was enough to protect us, but if he truly did name other individuals who were at the moment planning on attacking America, then don’t you think the arrests of these individuals would be known? Well, Cheney continues to CHERRY PICK his own “evidence” ‘to show’ he is completely innocent!

Here’s what was written in 2005 under the Bush Regime about the ‘arrests made’:

“You have informed us that the interrogation of KSM—once enhanced techniques were employed—led to the discovery of a KSM plot, the ‘Second Wave,’ ‘to use East Asian operatives to crash a hijacked airliner into’ a building in Los Angeles,” says the memo.

“You have informed us that information obtained from KSM also led to the capture of Riduan bin Isomuddin, better known as Hambali, and the discover of the Guraba Cell, a 17-member Jemaah Islamiyah cell tasked with executing the ‘Second Wave,’” reads the memo. “More specifically, we understand that KSM admitted that he had [redaction] large sum of money to an al Qaeda associate [redaction] … Khan subsequently identified the associate (Zubair), who was then captured. Zubair, in turn, provided information that led to the arrest of Hambali. The information acquired from these captures allowed CIA interrogators to pose more specific questions to KSM, which led the CIA to Hambali’s brother, al Hadi. Using information obtained from multiple sources, al-Hadi was captured, and he subsequently identified the Garuba cell. With the aid of this additional information, interrogations of Hambali confirmed much of what was learned from KSM.”

We’re supposed to consider this “fact” according to Dick Cheney and his buddies at the CIA.

No one died from being waterboarded as KSM was, but two prisoners did die in America’s custody!

By the way, Cheney and his CIA said they captured KSM in March of 2003, but yet, on the following Bush White House memo they claim they thwarted an attack by KSM in 2002:

If Dick Cheney, George Bush, and their CIA broke up a plot in 2002 by KSM, then how come they didn’t arrest him then? Seriously, if you’re an American FBI agent and you’ve got the bad guys in your sight…..you arrest them before they can attack or proceed in their crime! Right? Is something not adding up here? Cheney has more explaining to do! How do you thwart an attack without any evidence you did? No arrests, no physical evidence, but yet, they waited months to capture KSM! I thought they had him in their sights and thwarted an attack? And…..who was tortured to get the information that KSM was planning this 2002 attack? Huh. I bet Dick Cheney will just make up a name!

THE BOTTOM LINE: Cheney, Bush, and others broke Constitutional and International laws and now they’re working very hard to cover their asses. Cheney must be feeling the hot breath of Holder on his neck! Good. The war criminal should be in prison!

WASHINGTON — U.S. authorities have brought the first Guantanamo Bay detainee to the United States, flying him into New York to face trial for bombing U.S. embassies, the Justice Department said Tuesday.

The department said Ahmed Ghailani arrived in the early morning hours Tuesday, to be held in U.S. law enforcement custody until his trial in federal court in lower Manhattan. Ghailani was expected to make his initial appearance in Manhattan federal court later Tuesday.

“With his appearance in federal court today, Ahmed Ghailani is being held accountable for his alleged role in the bombing of U.S. Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya and the murder of 224 people,” Attorney General Eric Holder said in a press release. “The Justice Department has a long history of securely detaining and successfully prosecuting terror suspects through the criminal justice system, and we will bring that experience to bear in seeking justice in this case.”

This GITMO detainee had nothing to do with 9/11/01 at all, but then again, when did it matter to the Bush Regime what these prisoners did or didn’t do? They just wanted to fill the prison down there to make it appear they were ‘tough on terror’. This person should have been tried YEARS AGO! Anyway…something tells me after this guy’s trial, he will remain in our prison system for a long time. Agree? If not, let’s discuss.

Rachel Maddow interviewed Nancy Pelosi recently about how Sen. Patrick Leahy’s is getting ready to put together a Truth Commission to get to the bottom of the last 8 years of the Bush Regime. Pelosi completely supports it. (Rachel makes the comment on her show that Nancy not wanting immunity for those who will testify against the Bush Regime could be the deal breaker. We’ll have to wait and see. With pressure from the American people, I think Nancy will do the right thing by accepting immunity for those key witnesses!). Not only does she support it, but she feels REAL crimes & abuses were committed, and to protect and respect the Constitution….she would love to see legal action taken against any of the Bush officials! Maddow pressed Nancy on what she knew in 2001 that the American people didn’t know about torture being done in our name and Nancy said (what I have said for years now!) she was told things that was highly classified and because she could not (and still can’t) divulge what she knew to anyone, this is why some Democrats voted in favor of the Iraq war, the Military Commissions Act, the Patriot Act and so on and so forth, because Nancy was unable to say, “Don’t vote for it and here’s why!”.

So, despite what we’re hearing about how President Obama doesn’t want investigations of the Bush Regime to go forth, we must understand that we have members of Congress who do want to investigate. The American people want investigations and if I know President Obama like I think I do, then when he feels the excitement of the American people when these investigations start, he will be completely on board! I just know it.

With the Bush Administration, and thus the threat of retaliation against him, now gone, Neely decided to step forward and tell his story. “The stuff I did and the stuff I saw was just wrong,” he told the Associated Press. Neely describes the arrival of detainees in full sensory-deprivation garb, he details their sexual abuse by medical personnel, torture by other medical personnel, brutal beatings out of frustration, fear, and retribution, the first hunger strike and its causes, torturous shackling, positional torture, interference with religious practices and beliefs, verbal abuse, restriction of recreation, the behavior of mentally ill detainees, an isolation regime that was put in place for child-detainees, and his conversations with prisoners David Hicks and Rhuhel Ahmed. It makes for fascinating reading.

I hope Dick Cheney & George Bush were on the toilet when they read this first paragraph of this Harper Magazine article!
