The Army’s Criminal Investigation Command agents have been visiting Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland, to investigate the disappearance of the vials. Christopher Grey, spokesman for the command, said this latest investigation has found “no evidence of criminal activity.”
The vials contained samples of Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis, a virus that sickens horses and can be spread to humans by mosquitoes. In 97 percent of cases, humans with the virus suffer flu-like symptoms, but it can be deadly in about 1 out of 100 cases, according to Caree Vander Linden, a spokeswoman for the Army’s Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. There is an effective vaccine for the disease and there hasn’t been an outbreak in the United States since 1971.

WELLINGTON, Fla. (AP) – The sudden death of 21 polo horses at a championship event in Florida may have been caused by a toxin in the animals’ feed, vitamins or supplements, veterinarians said Monday.
The horses from the Venezuelan-owned team Lechuza Caracas became ill just before a tournament match Sunday, collapsing and dying on the scene or while being treated at vet clinics or transported, officials said.

An official at a Florida pharmacy said Thursday the business incorrectly prepared a supplement given to 21 polo horses that died over the weekend while preparing to play in a championship match.
Jennifer Beckett of Franck’s Pharmacy in Ocala, Fla., told The Associated Press in a statement that the business conducted an internal investigation that found “the strength of an ingredient in the medication was incorrect.” The statement did not say what the ingredient was.
All horses given a vitamin supplement died and five not given it lived. The supplement called Biodyl contains a combination of vitamin B12, a form of selenium called sodium selenite and other minerals. It is made in France by Duluth, Ga.-based animal pharmaceutical firm Merial Ltd. and can be given to horses to help with exhaustion. It is widely used abroad, but not approved in the U.S., a reason it may have been concocted by the Florida pharmacy.
I just heard that on the radio coming home today, Grant. Still, there are 3 viles missing of this virus. Kind of strange I think. Where does this stuff disappear to if it’s not for criminal uses?
