Obama did served on the eight-person anti-poverty education group Woods Fund Board along with Ayers between 1999 and 2002 and once accepted a $200 campaign donation from him when Obama was running for the Illinois legislature. Both Obama and Ayers live in Hyde Park, the township on Chicago’s southside which is home to the U. of Chicago. BTW, Ayers was NEVER convicted of any crime! Two Weathermen who were convicted however received pardons from President Clinton in 2001, yet Hillary brought up Ayers FIRST in one of her “kitchen sink” tirades.

Whatever his past, Ayers is now a respected member of the Chicago intelligentsia (English Professor U. of Illinois-Chicago), and still a member of the Woods Fund Board. The president of the Woods Fund, Deborah Harrington, said he had been selected for the board because of his solid academic credentials and “passion for social justice.”

“This whole connection is a stretch,” Harrington told me. “Barack was very well known in Chicago, and a highly respected legislator. It would be difficult to find people round here who never volunteered or contributed money to one of his campaigns.”

The Ayers connection is completely fair game for the McCain campaign, as is the Jeremiah Wright connection: Both are windows into the political world Barack Obama moved in, and the “no enemies to the left” caution with which he navigated Chicago politics. I tend to think that both connections tell you a little more about Obama’s tendency to be accommodating, and to tack with the prevailing political winds which ever way they blow, than they do about his own innermost convictions – I think he’s more of a “go along, get along” guy than a crypto-socialist – but reasonable people can disagree on this point, and either way the connections are perfectly appropriate material for talking points, speeches and campaign ads. (And yes, by the same token, there’s nothing unfair or dirty about the Obama campaign raising some of McCain’s dubious past associations either.)

I have heard some criticism from talking heads however for Obama fighting back with the Keating Five scandal showing he will throw mud too. Some are concerned that Obama is being drawn into an ugly fight that will belittle his earlier pronouncements that he will lead a different kind of campaign…take the high road (but didn’t McCain PROMISE a clean campaign earlier?….before he started losing?). We have the history of Dukakis and Kerry NOT fighting back, ignoring blatant charges thinking they would just go away and both ended up losing in the end, and Kerry was ahead in the polls almost up to election day (also sandbagged by a “last minute Bin Laden tape”).

Governor Palin’s comments, while offensive, are not surprising, given the McCain campaign’s statement that they would be launching Swift boat-like attacks in hopes of deflecting attention from the nation’s economic ills. In fact, the very newspaper story Governor Palin cited in hurling her shameless attack made clear that Senator Obama is not close to Bill Ayers, much less “pals,” and that he has strongly condemned the despicable acts Ayers committed 40 years ago, when Obama was eight. What’s clear is that John McCain and Sarah Palin would rather spend their time tearing down Barack Obama than laying out a plan to build up our economy.

The only problem with the above is that Palin’s and McCain’s riotous rhetoric has been played over-and-over on cable and networks news, essentially giving them FREE commercials. Obama’s response is only in some newspapers, probably at the bottom of page 19.
