Kay Bailey Hutchinson may return to Texas next spring to run against Gov. Rick Perry in the Republican primary against incumbent Gov. Rick Perry. Perry, once closely aligned with his mentor George W. Bush, is not popular in Texas these past couple of years with low approval ratings below 40%. He was opposed by Republican turned Independent State Comptroller Carole Strayhorn (Scotty McClellan's mother), and Independent singer Kinky Friedman and squeaked by with a 39% vote due to 30% of the voters going for third party candidates Strayhorn and Friedman. The Democrat Chris Bell was hurt by less money in his campaign fund and the third party candidates also, but still got 29% of the vote. Gov. Perry has not been popular due to his strong support for the NAFTA "superhighway" giving away construction and management of that toll road to the Spanish corporation, Cintra.
