I’m not surprised McTeleprompter hasn’t said anything about Helms’ death, because why the hell would he want to draw negative attention to himself when he’s getting such a free pass from the media as it is? And because Charlie Black was very close to Jessie Helms, there is no way in hell he didn’t know these things about him (and to think McCain, Black, and even Helms questioned why Barack stayed with his pastor so long!) so it makes you wonder why Charlie today is still part of John McCain’s campaign (emphasis mine in the following):
Helms was rewarded with a job as staff administrative assistant. In 1953, Helms returned to North Carolina as executive director of the state’s banking association, spending the next seven years fighting to enrich his bosses. He won a seat on the Raleigh City Council and, in 1960, took a job as a TV commentator. He spent the decade railing against King, “Negro hoodlums,” the media, “sex perverts,” and anyone on welfare. As he explained in one of his nightly five-minute broadcasts, “A lot of human beings have been born bums.”
Since Helms won election to the Senate, no “bums” have felt his rage as fiercely as citizens of poor nations. Over the years, the senator has proposed hundreds of measures to slash foreign aid, overthrow governments he doesn’t like, and block administration policies. As the new chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, he has made it clear that his first priority is to enact deeper cuts to a foreign aid budget already slashed nearly 30 percent in the past decade.
“The fact is that the American people are sick and tired of this whole foreign aid concept anyhow,” Helms said last year. “I find myself wishing that somehow we could put it on a national ballot and say: ‘What do you think of this?’”
Those cuts will hit hardest in the Third World, where Helms has long been a staunch ally of right-wing military rulers like Augusto Pinochet in Chile, Raoul Cedras in Haiti, and Roberto D’Aubuisson in El Salvador. Confronted with evidence that D’Aubuisson directed death squads to murder civilians, Helms made it clear that some things are more important than human life. “All I know,” he replied, “is that D’Aubuisson is a free enterprise man and deeply religious.”
Interesting…so we know John McCain has Charlie Black on his campaign and we know Charlie was connected to Jessie Helms for decades, but the best part is we now know that John McCain is in agreement with both Black & Helms, otherwise, McCain would have made a negative statement about Helms’ life and would have fired Charlie Black by now. Neither happened and that’s because John McCain is a racist, bigoted, hatemongering, “I’d starve a brown child before I’d let my own child go without her weekly allowance!” kind of person and homophobe who thinks gays are different on the inside than the rest of us!

The Politico.com (neutral but sometimes leans right) outlines the decades of Charlie Black’s influence in the campaigns of Jesse Helms. Ben Smith says that Helms most significant contribution to the reich-wing was being instrumental in getting Ronald Raygun to win the North Carolina primary in 1980 which more or less put the nail in the coffin for Gerald Ford.

Wonder if he hadn’t died earlier and kept on ice or maybe since he had suffered multiple strokes leaving him in a state of dementia, just pulled the plug on the FOURTH!

Always a homophobe, in 1995, Helms lashed out at AIDS patients and said the US government should spend less money on them because they became ill due to “deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct.”

However, the Republican Party was originally the “Party of Lincoln” and had the loyalty of most of black Americans up until the New Deal programs of Franklin Roosevelt began to draw black voters to the Democratic Party. Even then, Eisenhower still garnered 40% of the black vote in the 1950’s. It was Eisenhower who called out National Guard troops to integrate Little Rock Central High School. It was Eisenhower’s appointment of Republican Earl Warren as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and progressive William Brennan that we had Brown v. Board of Education, Gideon v. Wainwright, and Miranda v. Arizona that minorities were given equality in education and the justice system. This most progressive court era also gave us Roe v. Wade, among other “liberal” rulings.

Or, how about his ranking 894 out 899 in his graduating class because he was such a lousy scholar. Or CRASHING THREE planes before he even saw combat, all paid for (like his Annapolis education) by of course we taxpayers. If his daddy and grandfather hadn’t been Navy admirals, he would probably have been washed out of the Navy years ago. Also contrary to Navy regulations, McCain was given most of his medals without the necessary WITNESSES that other military personnel need to provide in order to become decorated.

Are you trying to be a bit of a smartass, Lisa??? Most of us know that many of us have it good here in the USA, that ours is (was?) a great nation that offers opportunities unlike few other places, but I must add the rest of the world is catching up, maybe even surpassing us. I lived abroad in the 70’s and was back in Europe for a month last year and saw a new booming economy and happy people who no longer see America as that “shining city on a hill” that Reagan promised.
I have visited 15 European nations and there are other places around this globe where I could easily settle in and be happy, even some places in Mexico. I am looking forward to spending this coming New Years and much of January in Australia and New Zealand. From what I know due to knowing some Aussies and Kiwis, from having a California cousin who emigrated there, I am sure I will find those nations “down under” just as good of a place to live as here.
The U.S. is a great nation but folks elsewhere are getting tired of many arrogant Americans always bragging “we are the greatest!”….often from Americans who have never been more than a couple counties away from their birthplace. Our biggest job is to make sure we remain a great nation “with liberty and justice for all” and not let us lose sight of what our Constitution promises us. We need to be always be on guard that our civil rights aren’t taken away by those in power.
Ghana is one of many places on our earth, especially in Africa and the Middle East and parts of Latin America, that is most poor and past colonial powers have done little but exploit them, steal their natural resources. Many of these former colonies are still being raped by the world’s corpfascists.

Every day an average of 30 Cubans (11,500 last year) just walk across the Mexican border into Texas and immediately surrender to U.S. officials as “dry foot” refugees, then most are on a fast track to citizenship (and most important, future Republicans!). Fewer Cubans are going by boat directly to Florida, anymore, finding it easier to float to Yucatan and enter the U.S. through Mexico, instead. Their biggest danger is being ripped off my Mexican coyotes who smuggle them north to the Rio Grande.
Meanwhile, other economic refugees, mostly from Latin America other than Cuba, take their chances sneaking into our nation, with over 500 dying of heat, and dehydration each year before they can be rescued (aka arrested). Even those non-Cuban Latin Americans with “green cards” who wish to become citizens often have to spend many years fighting bureaucratic red tape, giving thousands of dollars to immigration lawyers in order to gain the same “rights” as Cubans get just for being “Cuban”.

Barbara Walters is already being trashed by the reich-wingers for taking her week off last week to travel to Damascus, Syria. She described a Syria this morning on “The View” that isn’t going down well with the Arab-haters here. She felt most safe walking anywhere to shop, etc. without bodyguards. She noted that Syria has taken in 1.25 million Iraqi refugees since the Bush attack on Iraq.

Meanwhile, the United States, which has destroyed Iraqi life, has been reluctant to take in any of 4.7 Iraqi refugees here. In May, Bush signed a document that will allow 5,000 Iraqis to come here each year for the next five years.
Up until last year, the U.S. had only accepted 800 Iraqis TOTAL since the bombing began in March 2003. Sweden, a nation of less than 10 million (1/30th the size of the US), received tens of thousands of Iraqis in the meantime!
