I’ve been watching CNN for the vote results all night and a few things keep standing out to me. All of the republican candidates are getting a certain percentage of votes, meaning, they all have some sort of result to show. On the Democrat’s side it’s a different story….
….Hillary, Obama, and Edwards are all showing up with a percentage of the vote, but Kucinich and Uncommitted have gotten nothing. Zippo. Nada. Zilcho.
Something is awry here.
Then, I noticed Wolf Blitzer showing the ACTUAL number of votes for each candidate on the republican side. He pressed that the turnout was very small because of the weather, but despite that, each candidate had people voting for them and it was very “thorough” right down to Duncan Hunter (who dropped out tonight by the way).
I also noticed after this very thorough breakdown of the republican voter turnout, WOLFIE DIDN’T HAVE A TALLY FOR THE DEMOCRATS. Nope! He couldn’t even give a “voters so far” tally for the Democrats. he then went on to say that the Democratic turnout was far larger (set a record), but yet, he couldn’t give a number or a chart showing up to the minute how many Democrats were voting for each candidate. Gee! Now I wonder why that is?
Here’s my guess: ALONG WITH RON PAUL………..DENNIS KUCINICH DID VERY WELL TONIGHT, despite what CNN and what the “votes” are tallying as. They don’t want to show the actual voter numbers for each of the Democratic candidates, because then the viewers would see far more people for Kucinich than what they’re reporting!
Have you been watching and are you too seeing how weird all of this is? Let me know.

Is this like Kucinich winning spammed online polls?
LOL Not sure what you mean, but I think it’s very strange that Duncan Hunter got a certain percentage of votes and Dennis Kucinich & the “Uncommitteds” got nothing…didn’t even register.
the caucuses are different because if you dont meet a criteria (10 or 15) at a location, your votes usually go to someone who does meet the criteria, thats probably why kucinich is so low.. i dont think the repubs have the same caucus style.
Now, Kay, dear, you KNOW that cnn and the rest are ROM, and they will NEVER tell an iota of truth about ANY dem!
As you pointed out, though, it is VERY odd how they can’t find anyone who voted of Kucinich or Paul, etc. It’s just ALL so totally WRONG. Personally I’m getting ready to puke seeing all the talking bobble heads on the news stations, I have been trying NOT to watch. If I see joe (dead intern) scaroboro verbally masturbating over john mcwankstain anymore I’ll stick pencils in my eyes. No, perhaps I’ll stick them in joe’s eyes…or at least tweetys.
Oh that’s right, Rikc! I forgot.
Chris, Mainefem was telling me that dirty tricks can be played at these live vote caucuses. If you don’t know the rules, those that do can be very, very sneaky.
I still find it very strange that CNN would not provide the actual voter count for the Democratic candidates. Seems very fishy to me at the moment…
Okay, going to bed.
What else would you expect from the Clinton News Network (CNN), Kay ?
Peace,
Cosmic
The results of both Democrats and Republicans in Nevada are up at the NY Times. Kucinich got a total of 6 votes out of 10,560 cast and the NY Times gave him a 0.0% too. He was bested by John Edwards who got 396 votes or 3.8%. Looks like by the time I get to vote on March 4, there will only be TWO left standing out of the 9 who began the race last fall. My biggest disgust is that some small states, the MSM and DNC will have already named our party’s nominee before we 23.5 million Texans get to have our vote. Is this the “democracy” (votes virtually worthless) that Bush is spreading around the world???
Republicans still have 6 out of the original 10 with Tommy Thompson, Brownback, Tancredo, and Hunter now out of it. I figure Phreddie “Nightmare from K Street” Thompson will be the next to pull in his chips (Nevada would have been the best place!).
http://politics.nytimes.com/election-guide/2008/results/states/NV.html
Wow, Romney has won THREE states, one his HOMEstate of Michigan and two with large Mormon populations….Nevada and Wyoming! Bet he sweeps Utah, too!
I only watched MSNBC and fell asleep before 9 p.m. but Hillary had long been projected the winner. Seems at the last minute in Nevada, calls were being made to caucus members to be wary of Barack HUSSEIN Osama. South Carolina hadn’t been determined for McCain at that time but see he dropped a bit after I turned off my TV.
http://politics.nytimes.com/election-guide/2008/results/states/SC.html
Doesn’t look good for Huckleberry that the evangelicals didn’t go all out for him. Maybe McCain, after a lifetime in the Episcopal Church, finding the “real” Jesus as a Southern Baptist maybe helped! I was surprised that Ron Paul only got 3.8% of South Carolina, and this after visiting Bob Jones University, “Mecca” for Xtian reich-wingers this past Thursday.
http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20080117006251&newsLang=en
Huckabee and Mitt Romney had also visited Bob Jones University. Surprising that BJU (love the acronym since they are so full of homophobia!) allowed Mitt since the rabid Xtian fundies at Bob Jones believe Mormonism as being an unXtian cult.
Kay..Go to blackboxvoting and register so you can make comments. They usually answer questions. Your concern might already be up.The one to watch is N.H. There have been comments about CNN showing suspicious numbers.
Your concern is already there. Except on the repub. side.
Proportionality, Kay–Dennis didn’t do shit (5 votes) in NV’s caucus (he has zero national delegates thus far).
Obama’s particular caucus tallies in certain districts were weighted, so he actually has one more national delegate, vs. Billary (again–proportionality & district demographic density).
You may want to read Maine’s thoroughly before attending–i.e., caucus training packet process and delegate selection plan.
[PDF alerts]
The caucuses won’t exactly be jam-packed on 2.10.08, BTW!
Hell, they’re begging for convenors and attendees (Washington County is pathetically devoid thus far).
…it’ll be nothing like the ‘04 fiasco (which concerned more urban areas–no need to worry in your small precint–you hardly have a plethora of registered Democrats–vs. unenrolleds and Rethugs).
Current Dem. Pres. candidates will be more than flat broke by Feb. 10th (will be lucky if they make it up to; and through Super Tuesday).
A.B.H.
sp=precinct (need more coffee)!
First off, I salute you Kay, for being able to watch CNN.
The thought of spanding even 5 minutes with Leslie, Blackjack Bennett and Donna Brazile, makes me feel sick. I know CNN likes to beat their viewers over the head with “we’re the best political team on television” every 10 minutes but, they’re not.
About the Nevada count, the fact is, Barack Obama (who I support) actually leaves with 13 delegates to the Borg Queen’s 12 delegates. So, he won. Despite the ridiculous mainstream media cheering on the Borg Queen, she won one fewer delegate than did Obama.
[...]
“Delegates for the national convention will not be determined until April 19.” Jill Derby, Chair of the Nevada State Party, also spoke out on delegates as the results came in. She emphasized that national delegate counts are “based upon an assumption that delegate preferences will remain the same,” when in fact they could change at the convention. Derby added a disconcerting line to hammer the point home: “We look forward to our county and state conventions where we will choose the delegates for the nominee that Nevadans support.”
[....]
“The contest in Nevada drew record turnout among Democratic caucusgoers, a reflection of the intensity of the race. In hundreds of precinct caucuses, including nine casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, about 116,000 voters took part in the first Western contest in the battle for the Democratic presidential nomination, 10 times the amount in the 2004 caucuses here. With 98 percent of the precincts reporting on Saturday night, Mrs. Clinton, of New York, had 51 percent of the vote and Mr. Obama, of Illinois, had 45 percent. Mr. Edwards, of North Carolina, came in with 4 percent, a surprisingly poor showing given the attention he had devoted to Nevada.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/20/us/politics/20nevada.html?em&ex=1200978000&en=5461e79bfd7926d6&ei=5087
Out of 116,000 voters, you mean to tell me no one was uncommitted and only 6 voted for Kucinich?
I don’t believe that.
Weird that Ron Paul would come in 2nd place here too and Kucinich only gets a total of 6 votes total.
Is it possible the Democratic Party wants more war? Could be.
Bill Clinton walked into one casino caucus room, and it almost started a race riot between the Clinton and Obama supporters; it was all taped and is up on youtube.
Is this it, Ox?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=HWeUIdEfJnA
Re. Does the democratic party want more war? I found an answer to that question on rense.com. Webster Tarply wrote about the backers of Obama and Hillary. Zbrzinski(sp?)..who was Carter’s foreign policy advisor, would wage war with Russia.Says Obama is to the right of Hillary.Webster Tarply was a guest on the Mike Malloy show on Air America right before Mike was fired. If you can get past the wierd background colors and some of the content on this site…and you are concerned about the economy…Foreclosures the Untold Story is mind boggling. It seems Bill Clinton repealed a banking Act from the FDR period which denied banks the ability to invest in securities. This happened during the Monica period and was virtually unnoticed. That is why we are heading for another depression along with deregulation. Looks like they are all working together.
FWIW~
Chellie’s been bumped down to 3rd place, re: DFA’s Grassroots All-Star Candidate “poll.”
If you folks don’t want to reveal your first and last names, make sumpthin’ up.
Pls. disseminate!
Here are the specs.
Thanks~
Molly, thanks I will have to check that out. You are right, they all are working together towards making us a third world country and a one world government. Democrats love Clinton but the scumbag bastard is the one who put Bush 41’s original NAFTA on steroids and who shit all over the unions. We are so f**ked people. You know it’s all over for this so called democracy when corporations who own the media decide which candidates can be present at their debates.
Kay, you should feel bad…according to that snake mirth your commments at a certain blog made a thread…in her own words “yukky” so she slithered on out of there, much to the dismay of her Queen who said she hates it when good people leave blogs do to the comments of others…LMAO!
Mirth is a fake, but apparently, the fakers who support John Edwards are free to continue being that way! No strength in those Edwards supporters, huh? They’re afraid of their own shadows….just like Edwards was when Kerry didn’t want a recount in 2004!
Queen Karol thinks Mirth is good people? Holy cow! She don’t know Mirth, now does she? Spit.
Notice how they never say the reich wing trolls comments to me are yukky? No way! John, Mirth, Karol, and the other Kay Haters enjoy the trolls. Oh yes! The reich wing trolls get to have dinner with them as long as they’re hating Kay with all their might!
Fucking assholes. I hate them AND THE FUCKING TROLLS.
Kay, no that is not the one!
Ha ha. Karol got slammed again about her using her “ancestry” (not sure I believe her version) last night:
I see racism is alive and well.
An American Karol | Homepage | 01.19.08 – 9:56 pm
You might actually garner more respect if you’d stop trying to portray your family and yourself as if you were the only victims of what you call “The Removal” and its aftermath.
Honey, some of us out here also had family forced to walk away from their homes, probably right beside your ancestors.
Get a grip. Lighten up. There isn’t a world conspiracy out to get Karol just because you act like there is.
JohnPHL | 01.20.08 – 4:19 am | #
Karol’s first comment was in response to my comment asking if Karol participates in the powwows at the campgrounds in her state, because she says she’s “tribal”. LOL She said I was being racist. Oh please!
Ox, can you find the link for me? I’d love to post it!
Thanks.
The Queen told all about her pending vacation this summer to research her ancestry. Opps, that can’t be right because she is going to the Czech Republic. On the one hand, she tells the crowd about cutting expenses, and on the other….it is off the Europe.
Mainefem, you might want to post that on Ablog where Karol & Mirth can be the cheerleaders for Chellie & Tom Allen! They’ve got the strength to be good for their campaigns, don’t you know? *rolling eyes* Ole Johnny has made it perfectly clear that the WATB voice is the only voice allowed on Ablog! Every time Johnny or Joe do a post about Susan Collins, ole Karol will say that Tom Allen doesn’t have a chance and ole Suzie-Q is gonna win it! Nice huh? Let the voice of the Abloggers scream loudly to defeat the progressives in 2008! Woohoo!
The video was linked to a link yesterday, but will try to find it.
I read that, Ox. Now that someone mentioned the Czech Republic suddenly ole Karol is thinking of going there this summer! Oh please! What a fake! Can you say “Penelope of Saturday Night Live”?!?!!!! Oh wait, Johnny loves the fakes who support Edwards, because as we’re finding out….there is strength in the fakers and that’s why their voice is helping Edwards do well in the caucuses & the primaries this year! LOL
Anyone in Maine who is currently *unenrolled* (”Independent party” doesn’t exist in ME, BTW) can either show up @their caucus (one half hr. *early*) & register as a Democrat; or do it ahead @your town office/city hall. Clerk, or registrar of voters (in larger areas).
Or a Notary Public, if ‘ya know anyone personally can do it in a flash.
Do not be late, or you cannot register/participate.
Same deal w/being on time once the caucus is called to order.
Nobody should be allowed in–and/or to vote once it’s convened.
You can vote absentee, but that nixes any second round voting (which is where the horse-trading happens).
http://mainedems.org/caucus08.aspx
Anyone who’s already a Greenie or Rethug needs to change registration *by* Jan. 26th.
(if they want to caucus as a Democrat, that is).
I’m stonewalling; and will re-enroll only if Billary does well on Super Tuesday.
Defensive voting….
A.B.H.
ttfn~
Thanks for the info, Mainefem. I’m going to forward a link to your comment to Chris from Maine who was asking about this. Thank you!
Oopsie–forgot something.
Change of residency & photo ID (registration).
Take a ME driver’s license, or the ME state ID w/you (establishes who you are, via PHOTO).
If you are still registered as a Democrat in the same town/city; BUT HAVE MOVED SINCE THE LAST TIME YOU VOTED, you must re-register/update info.
The amount of fully grown adults who don’t know that is astounding. Yes, I am a ME Notary Public…I don’t like it when votes/elections are contested!
Deja Vu.
17 yr. olds in Maine (who will turn 18 by the Nov. general election) may caucus, too.
They didn’t bother last time, but at least they *can*…it was hell passing that damned law (Rethugs, natch–didn’t like it one iota).
People in ME (esp. renters & blue/working class folks) move a lot; and aren’t deemed as “likely voters” (voting every 2 or 4 yrs. in the Nov. general means squat=unlikely voter).
Again–arrive @least 1/2 hr. early.
Go check your town/city’s specs @the MDP link upthread.
Esp. if changing registration in any way (I’d do it in advance at your town office/city hall w/the clerk or Registrar-one less hassle in life).
Most importantly:
BE PUNCTUAL, if ‘ya wanna participate.
Once the caucus is convened, it’s too late.
Inclement weather re-scheduling caucus date is Feb. 17th, BTW.
Again–turnout isn’t projected to be anything heavy, so caucuses won’t take long.
Candidates who’re running for state leg. seats will have their nomination papers there for sigs (as will CD#2/Michaud; and Tom Allen, etc.).
And that Tom Ledue person…what a hoot.
Never heard of the guy in my life.
That’s in CD#2, BTW.
I can’t find the link to the video, but it occurred in a casino ballroom and was about 1.5 minutes long
I’d advise Chris to go to his Searsport town office (town clerk) and register early this week, Kay.
Take ME state driver’s license/state ID & proof of residency status (e.g., phone, rental receipt, bank statement, electric or oil bill; or cable/internet access bill, etc.).
Proves his residency status; which can be dicey for folks who may only have a P.O. box.
Mucho easier to do it in advance, vs. 1/2 hr. before a caucus starts.
Again–be punctual.
They’ve had convenor trainings (supposedly), but I’d also read the rules/print some off in advance, also.
Once the caucus is convened, town committees will be formed/beefed up, officers elected, bylaws tweaked if necessary, and then you do the first Pres. preference balloting (and indicate whether you want to attend the state convention as a delegate in May).
That’s where further delegate/candidate “winnowing” ensues on the second round.
You sit as a delegate w/your town & county delegation (if opting to attend the May state convention–can also sign up as an alternate–on the Pres. balloting form, etc.
Nobody screwed Dean over at my ‘04 city caucus (second round of voting), as I was fully prepared.
I had the rules in my freakin’ *lap*.
*g*
We were told to be sure that *nobody* was allowed in the room once it was convened–do not be late (get an accurate head count); and to ensure that the second round of votes indeed occured & were tallied legitimately (Iowa had some issues in that regard).
And to object like crazy if any of that crap was pulled.
My caucus went fine; and the “stragglers” who lacked viability (Kucinich, Edwards, & Clark folks) who didn’t have enough proportional votes chose to blend in w/my Dean group–or they could’ve opted to blend themselves into one of their three candidates for one caucus vote only.
That’s the importance of the second vote (which ‘ya can’t do if voting absentee, BTW).
It was the packed “urban” caucuses (a couple in Bangor & in Orono) in ‘04 who got a bit testy.
They won’t be packed this time, trust me.
And yes–the Deaniacs in said “testy” caucuses in Pen. Cty. didn’t back off–we were trained well.
The town/city clerks have to update the voter lists @the last minute for the caucuses (hence, the deadline for Rethugs and Greenies who want to register/cross over).
The county Dem. committee ususally has an updated copy from all town/city clerks; as do the town/city caucus convenors.
However, any last minute convenor volunteers could be potential dummies, so I’m always on the side of caution. A caucus secretary is also elected–solely for that day; and that person keeps things tallied appropriately; and is a backup to ensure that the rules are followed/instills decorum, etc.
What’s shocking to me is the major *lack* of convenors in Washington County’s towns.
Ouch.
If a town/city does NOT have a convenor, one may not caucus (absentee, or otherwise).
Shoulda passed that casino referenda…they’ve been pissed at Baldacci since the ‘06 cycle down in Washington County.
The ABlog folks don’t strike me as terribly informed about caucuses (generally speaking)–let alone, about Maine politics, Kay.
Furthermore, it’s the same 10-15 folks over there blathering away…nothing worth my (unpaid) time.
Or the keystrokes…I’m no fan of “meta,” Kay!
Chris can register at the Searsport town office (clerk) this week–saves a ton of hassle.
Convenors *should* have an updated voter list from town clerks on caucus day.
Proportionality per town/city depends upon how many Dems. were registered w/the Sec. of State in ‘06.
Take photo ID (proves who you are) & proof of residency status (bank statement, utility bill, cable, phone, internet, oil–whatever).
If you’ve moved (even within the same town/city) since the last time you voted, it needs to be updated.
Many adults in ME don’t even know basic voter law–it’s pathetic.
17 yr. olds can caucus, as long as they turn 18 by the Nov. election.
I doubt they’ll bother, but we’re one of the few states who allow it; and had to fight tooth and nail to get it passed two yrs. ago.
Esp. if anyone has a P.O. box, vs. receives mail via mail carrier to a mailbox.
Be PUNCTUAL; and ensure that nobody enters the caucus milieu once it’s convened.
Nada. Period.
Convenors have presumably been “trained;” however, maybe not (if they’re last minute volunteers, and/or inexperienced).
Each caucus elects a Sec. for that day; officers for a town committee (2 yr. cycle), and beefs up bylaws if necessary.
Get a pocket copy of _Robert’s Rules of Order_, fmi. It’s cheap.
The 2nd round of voting is what’s important; and that the caucus Sec. keeps impeccable counts/records.
Download the rules from the MDP portal; & take a copy w/you…my caucus went smoothly, as we Deaniac captains were trained well in advance.
It was the packed urban caucuses which had testy verbal fisticuffs (although, not all).
The 2nd round of voting is what’s integral (horse-trading, if any).
If your candidate isn’t viable, you’ll need to either join another group, or convince enough stragglers to join to make your candidate (or theirs) viable.
People seem to have a wacky notion that caucus “votes” are the same as that of primaries.
Nada.
Washington County has more towns *lacking* convenors than not–can’t caucus w/o one, BTW.
Ouch.
NV caucuses are not at all the same as Maine’s–varies from state to state.
The folks @ABlog don’t know diddly about ME caucuses (or ME politics, for that matter).
You’ll fill out nomination papers for state leg. candidates running (you have a “red” Sen. in your district–would be nice to get rid of Kay, BTW)–as well as nomination papers for Tom, Mike, and that Tom Ledue (running against Tom Allen in the June Sen. primary).
Never heard of the guy.
Again–the rules are on the MDP’s portal; and don’t be late!
Inclement weather re-scheduling date is Feb. 17th, BTW.
I don’t anticipate hardly any caucus-goers, BTW–totally different scenario, vs. ‘04.
Should go smoothly–esp. in small towns (who have hardly any Dems.).
Now Mirth is weighing in and defending Karol using her heritage to say to others, “You can’t talk to me like that because I have Native American in me!”. These two are so pathetic, because they’d defend Hitler if he hated Kay too!:
JohnPHL @ 4:19 am:
You are a very good example of the ignorance of many US citizens of their history.
You equate individual families forced from their individual homes to the land grab genocide of Eastern Native Americans?
“The Cherokee were given two years to migrate voluntarily, at the end of which time they would be forcibly removed. By 1838 only 2,000 had migrated; 16,000 remained on their land. The U.S. government sent in 7,000 troops, who forced the Cherokees into stockades at bayonet point. They were not allowed time to gather their belongings, and as they left, whites looted their homes. Then began the march known as the Trail of Tears, in which 4,000 Cherokee people died of cold, hunger, and disease on their way to the western lands.
By 1837, the Jackson administration had removed 46,000 Native American people from their land east of the Mississippi, and had secured treaties which led to the removal of a slightly larger number. Most members of the five southeastern nations had been relocated west, opening 25 million acres of land to white settlement and to slavery.”
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part…rt4/ 4p2959.html
I haven’t read Karol claim she is the “only victim” of The Removal or any other shameful and murderous and racist episodes of US history. Instead, she has written with clarity and passion about her family’s experience.
Karol’s writings have prompted me to learn more about this piece of our collective history and because of this I am a more knowledgeable and enlightened citizen. I’m also more aware of the lasting generational consequences of this historical period. For this, I owe Karol a debt.
But then, I don’t dig in thread comments looking for a way to attack certain commenters, particularly with such a flimsy perspective.
She should “lighten up?”
I say you should read up.
mirth | 01.20.08 – 12:45 pm | #
According to Mirth (a.k.a. Big Feet) and Karol, if you have an ancestor who was treated badly, you can use their experience as a defense in a lawsuit. Yeah, yeah, you can say, “Yes, I killed my neighbor, but I did it because he was calling me Indian Girl and because one of my ancestors 300 years ago got the same kind of treatment I had a very good reason to gun him down in cold blood!”.
See? Pathetic.
“I don’t dig in thread comments looking for a way to attack certain commenters, particularly with such a flimsy perspective.” ~ Mirth
I love this comment, because she does exactly that.
At least I can admit that I do this because I despise them, but no! Not the Perfect Karol & Mirth! They do this and will then say, “I never do shit like that” even though she’s on a thread this morning that is at least 12 hours old and found a comment she didn’t like and then responded to it!
Yep. Those John Edwards supporter sure are ironic and hypocritical.
583 registered Dems. in Searsport (’06).
That’s how proportionality & delegates are determined–i.e., to state convention in May per town/county, etc.
It won’t be too crowded, Chris! They’ll be thrilled to see ‘ya….
Rich Burk is a progressive Dem., BTW–he was a great supporter of Jean’s Sen. race.
Burnrate factors.
Yikes!
Might have to vote for my cat on Feb. 10th (if at all–nobody left standing).
Ledue & Dobson (I can’t wait to see ‘em both get on the ballot w/enough nomination paper signatures; and raise a few million bucks++, to boot).
I’ve never heard of this Ledue guy; and by looking at Dobson’s photo, she went off that so-called “hunger strike” quite awhile back.
At least she finally figured out that Maine has no “Independent Democrat” legit voter registration status (or party, for that matter).
A trust fund puppy, perhaps?
What a trip. Crazy people in this state.
*g*
Thanks for the update on the race here in Maine, Mainefem. I’m very disenfranchised right now and will be one of the crazy people making a principled stand come caucus time. I have to. I honestly can’t wrap my brain around the Establishment anymore.
There was a response to mirth. I don’t know why JohnPHL bothered. Mirth either misunderstood John’s comment or had an agenda before she replied. I’m shocked. Shocked, I say.
Nice, Randy. I must be one of the “freaks”. Hell, I’ve been called worse as you know and don’t heart!
I didn’t take the word “freaks” quite the same way you did Kay but then I was already on your side. I think he meant the drive-by commenters like Cepan, CDS, etc.
There is a commemoration every year out of northern Indiana to reenact the “Trail of Death” which has been renamed in recent years as the “Trail of Courage” about the forced removal of Indiana’s Native Americans in 1838. The Potawatomi tribe from the South Bend area were joined farther south by another movement of Miamis and Delawares who were being removed from central Indiana. By 1840, except for half-breeds and those with deeds to land, ALL of the Indians had been removed from the old Indian Territory (the first designated HOME for Indians before Oklahoma) which had become the state of Indiana in 1816.
http://www.potawatomi-tda.org/ptodhist.htm
My great aunt was a Miami, from the chief’s family, the Godfroys. Many of the Miamis had become most adaptive of the white man’s ways, partially due to some intermarrying with whites and an emphasis on getting a white man’s education. A matriarch of the the tribe (and ancestor of my aunt) was Frances Slocum, a white child kidnapped by the Delawares in Pennsylvania, then sold to the Miamis who raised her as one of their own.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~scwhite/slocum/frances.html
Many of Miamis did abide by white man laws and recorded deeds to a lot of the land in what is now Miami County, Indiana. So when the federal authorities tried to evict them, they waved their legal deeds in their faces. So about half of the Miami tribe went to Oklahoma, while the other half stayed on their “farms” in Indiana.
Several years ago, the several thousand Miamis in Indiana wanted to open a casino in Peru, Indiana. But since they had lost tribal status by not moving to Oklahoma they were denied. Anyway, Donald Trump wanted to build a casino in Gary, Indiana and he prevailed.
Interesting bit in today’s NY Times:
Mr. Edwards has also been having a difficult time breaking through between Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama, whom he often calls “the $100 million candidates.” One study said Mr. Edwards received 7 percent of national news coverage during five days this month, while Mrs. Clinton received 37 percent and Mr. Obama 32 percent.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/21/us/politics/21edwards.html
No mention of what percentage of time was afforded to Kucinich! Any guess WHOM the MSM wishes to be coronated to lead the Democrats?
Hi folks,
Another Mainer here, responding to Mainefem.
My $0.02 – Just because you haven’t heard of a candidate before, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take the time
to look at their message before writing them off. If after you hear what they have to say, and still find it to be total BS, then by all means write ‘em off. Even though money dominates our political landscape, when did they write the law that you have to be a wealthy career politician in order to run for public office? Ever think that half the reason things are so messed up is due to the fact that we have people who are very good at putting forth a good public image, lining their own pockets, arguing, and building up own egos rather than possessing the ability to thinking critically and solve problems?
I encourage you to take a look at http://www.tomledue.com and see what his message is.
Ledue is an uncommon political candidate that has the visionary leadership skills we need to get us where we want to be as a country. Plus, he’s a nice guy, give him a call or send him an email and he’ll be happy to talk with you. Ledue supports proactive leadership, rather than the reactive-waiting for crises to occur/letting crises occur leadership that dominates the politics of our federal system.
You may think he is crazy to run against Tom Allen, but I think he has a better message, a better strategy to get what we need done, and better ideas. Tom Allen has done a good job at moving the pebbles out of our path, but he’s played it safe like a career politican and left boulders we can’t get around. For Maine, both Collins and Allen are part of the broken political system that has brought us to where we are today. We’re facing a wall and we need someone with the tenacity to take on the challenge of knocking it down.
