I guess it's like the Catholic Priests who join the church years before to 'cure' themselves of their pedophilia. They feel by joining a church that is harsh on the gays (separate from pedophilia of course!) it will cover up the fact that they have some severe problems. Religious right fathers in our country do the same thing: they rape and molest their own children but when they leave their house they're 'good, white, and pure' and use this image as a cover up for their own disgusting behavior!
