“Warriors Walk” is losing space to honor war dead

What a wonderful way Fort Stewart, Georgia is honoring their soldiers who have died in Iraq. Warriors Walk is a memorial where after a short ceremony an eastern redbud tree is planted in honor of each soldier. Well, they’re running out of room now. So far, they’ve lost 318 soldiers and the caretakers of this memorial are realizing the true impact of what’s been lost:

Jeff Fornshell, the post’s ceremonies coordinator, said he wonders how many trees he’ll have to plant this year. Expanded twice since its inception, Warriors Walk has room for only 72 more trees.

“Is 72 going to be enough? I hope it is,” Fornshell said. “I hope we don’t put any more out here. You’re all the time thinking you don’t want to have a new tree dedication.”

How disheartening. And for what noble cause have these soldiers died for? No one knows. Even George Bush is not saying. One thing is for sure, though, George’s friends and family have been getting more wealthy as the years go by since the first boot was put on the ground back in March of 2003. They have their own noble cause as to why our soldiers need to stay in Iraq. They keep saying to us, “Victory must be achieved!”, “We will win!”, and “Mission Accomplished!”, but they never tell us what we will win, what winning will look like, or how we’ll know when the mission is ACTUALLY accomplished. It’s a secret, apparently. The mission is only known to them, dammit. It’s none of our business!

While the caretakers of this memorial in Georgia continue to honor those who gave their life for their country, it does make you wonder what will they do when there is no more room? I don’t even want to think about it. It hurts my heart.

Have you been in Iraq 24/7 for 9 months? Do you read varied view point media reports on Iraq? Obviously not is the answer, unless you believe the everyday Iraqi people and a political freedom have no value. In case you think I don’t care about our soldiers injured and lost,I almost lost my son there.

Barbara, sorry to say this, but your response doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Kay, and the rest of us here, DO read and listen to varied view points other than Fox and CNN and the New York Times. That’s why we see this invasion and occupation of Iraq as a war crime. We shouldn’t have ever invaded that country. The Iraqis’ every day life is that of Hell on Earth. Even under Saddam, things were better then than they are now. Under Saddam, people weren’t blowing up themselves and complete strangers on the street. They had free medical, education, women were educated, there was clean water and electricity. What the DIDN’T HAVE was Weapons of Mass Distruction. That they did was a total LIE.

I am relieved to know that you did NOT lose your son, but surely he has told you of the atrocities being committed. Does he believe this war/occupation is justified?

Is he getting the medical care he deserves?
